Biography - Peggy Ann Johnston

Teaching Experience/Skills

1997-Present - Private Art Instructor in my studio.
Small classes taught primarily in clay, PMC, papier mâché, pique assiette mosaic, printmaking, felting, polymer clay, watercolor, wire, gourd art, fused glass, and drawing. Classes emphasize the creative process in addition to technique. I give several workshops and classes per year to local elementary schools and private school programs.

1996 -2000 - Jewish Day School of the Northern Peninsula (Belmont/Foster City).
Taught two introductory clay classes at the Kindergarten level 1996. 1999-2000. After school Art Program with 5, 6, and 8-week cycles grades 1-5. Lessons in Clay, Printmaking, Wire, etc.

1995-1998 - West Valley Elementary (Cupertino Union School District).
Designed custom curriculum and taught a comprehensive art curriculum for grades 1-3. The 14- and 10-lesson packages included: Clay (2-3 lessons), Printmaking (3-5), Watercolor (2), Papier Mâché (3-4).

1994-2003 - Let's Look At Art docent and mentor docent for the San Jose Museum of Art.
Presented art prints in Santa Clara County schools grades K-6. Developed 10 hands on art lessons to be given  to teachers after the LLAA presentations countywide.

1993-1998 - Christa McAuliffe Elementary (CUSD).
Custom designed and taught full-year, weekly art lessons which were connected with the curriculum Grades 2-6. Lessons included: Clay and papier mâché at all levels, watercolor, printmaking, plaster masks, landscape and still life painting, perspective, drawing, wire work, etc.

1992-1993 - Forest Hill Elementary (Campbell District).
Developed and taught several clay classes for all the First Grades. Clay art works were fired and painted.

1979-1986 - St. Andrew’s  College (North Carolina).
Tenured Assistant Professor of Psychology. Designed and taught the following lecture/laboratory classes: Introduction to Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Statistics and Research Methods, Developmental Psychology, Human Learning and Memory, Perception, Gerontology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Perception and Art (for an Elder hostel). Also served as the Department Chairperson for several years. Staff member of teaching team for freshman general science class. Taught in local Elementary School District In service workshops for teachers. Developed and Co-Directed a nonprofit organization for childcare resource and referral which also provided the county with classes for parents and providers to improve quality of childcare.

1974-1979 - Miami University.
Teaching Assistant for several experimental psychology undergraduate courses while a graduate student.

1974 - University of Michigan.
As a Senior, designed and team-taught Experimental Psychology Course.


Workshops Taught (selected) 

2000-present - Discovery Day at Regnart Elementary (CUSD). 
Give 4 short workshops each spring to students usually grades 1-3 on the business of being an artist, with demos and hands on projects.

2002 January -  Resource Area For Teachers (R.A.F.T.) Workshop: Wild, Wonderful Wire.
A 5-hour one day comprehensive workshop on working with wire in the classroom.

2001 - Resource Area For Teachers (R.A.F.T.) Workshop: You Can Make Anything Out Of Papier Mâché. 
An 8-hour two day comprehensive workshop

1995-1999- Exploration Day at West Valley Elementary (CUSD).  
Gave 5 short workshops (each year) to students at a variety of grade levels on Painting with Bubbles.

1997 - Discovery Day at John Muir Elementary (CUSD).
Gave 5 short workshops to students at a variety of grade levels on Painting with Bubbles.

1997 - Visual Arts Portfolio Workshop:; Clay Vessels.
Presented 6 sessions to teachers in the CUSD on a lesson developed for the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation (C.E.E.F.).

1998 - Second Annual Hands-On Arts Workshop: Finding the Creature In The Clay (Creating With Clay).
Presented 5 sessions for teachers in the CUSD in a workshop sponsored by the C.E.E.F.

1998 - R.A.F.T. Workshop Papier Mâché Puppets.
Team-taught 4-hour workshop for teachers (K-12) on using papier mâché in the classroom using a technique I developed which is low mess. Presented the history of papier mâché and various strategies for lessons on making puppets using R.A.F.T. supplies.


1997 - R.A.F.T. Workshop: Multicultural No-Mess Papier Mâché. 
Team-taught 4-hour workshop for teachers (K-12) on using papier mâché in the classroom using a technique I developed which is low mess. Presented the history of papier mâché and various strategies for lessons on making multicultural vessels, sculpture, etc. using R.A.F.T. supplies.
